The recent news of a shortage of road salt in Troy and other communities prompted the usual blizzard of negative comments on social media about the operation of the City's resources in the middle of winter.
As frequently is the case, the gripes were premature and based on too little knowledge.
Mayor Carmella Mantello's emergency declaration about the supply was more than just a piece of information. Issuing it allowed the City to look elsewhere for supplies rather than having to be limited to the contractual supplier. As can be seen above in the photo posted today on Facebook, the City quickly obtained sufficient road salt to take care of our roads for the winter.
In a statement on its website, American Rock Salt, which supplies municipalities statewide, said that since October 14 of last year, teams have worked in the salt mines 'round the clock every day except holidays to mine the salt to meet what it labels a "historic demand." It has shipped more than 2.1 million tons of salt this winter.
American Rock Salt is located in Mount Morris, Livingston County, south of Rochester.
