Public comment session for City Hall proposal

A major project in Troy is a proposed new location for City Hall. Mayor Carmella Mantello has proposed buying the former Proctor's Theater building at 82 4th Street downtown and coverting it to City Hall administration space.

The controversial projection will be seeking public input in a series of three sessions as shown in the illustration above. May we suggest you find the time to show up at one more of them to comment or simply to absorb information since a lot of your tax dollars will be involved.

Save the date for our annual picnic

Please reserve Sunday, July 27, on your social calendar.

That's the date for our umpteenth annual "Terrace at Highpointe Community Association Summer Picnic."

Details to come, but be assured it will once again be an opportunity for a fun get-together and a perfect opportunity for our newer neighbors to get to know the longer-tenured ones.

We've had a variety of luck when it comes to the weather for our outings. For example, the Old Farmer's Almanac predicts scattered thunderstorms for that date while claiming an 80% accuracy rate for its forecasts. However, studies suggest a 50% to 52% accuracy rate, according to Climavision and Wikipedia. So, chances are we'll stay dry.

About those bridge panhandlers ...

In addition to the many longstanding signs greeting motorists crossing the Collar City bridge, add the one shown above.

As noted in a Times Union story, "TROY -- It’s OK to say no to panhandlers. That’s the message proffered by a new sign on Hoosick Street next to the Collar City Bridge. It includes a link to a city webpage showing a list of nonprofit groups where the charitable may send donations instead."

Meanwhile, no word about insisting the panhandlers clean up the discarded cardboard, beverage containers, sandwich wrappers, cigarette butts, etc., they habitually leave behind on the bridge.

Holiday closings on Thursday

This Thursday is Juneteenth, an official holiday in many jurisdictions. Which means many government workers get a paid day off and taxpayers don't get services -- as happens so often all year long.

And no, you don't get a tax rebate for any of the ever-increasing number of paid government holidays. (Cumulatively, they amount to two weeks' paid vacation in addition to all regular vacation days.)

Among the closings for the day:

• Troy City Hall and all city services except first responders.

• Regular U.S. Postal Service will not be available although, according to the carrier who delivers to the Terrace, some package deliveries and priority mailings may be made.

• Most banks will be closed for the day.

• All federal offices such as Social Security, VA, etc., will be closed.

• Troy Public Library branches will not be in operation.

• Lansingburgh and Troy school districts will close all schools for the day.

There are others, so best plan to check ahead.

Meanwhile, the City of Troy says garbage and recycling containers will be picked up as usual on Friday morning, so plan to put out your trash as usual on Thursday night.
