Scenes from a summer picnic, 2025

The usual weather pattern for the annual Terrace Summer Picnic goes something like this:

1. Everyone arrives, sets up the food and the lawn chairs.

2. Conversation and dining begin.

3. Rain arrives, pretty much ending the event.

This year the sequence changed a bit on Sunday. This time the rain began first, then we ate, drank, and chattted while the inclement stuff quickly disappeared. Plenty of sunshine ensured.

Thanks, as always, to event organizer Ellie and all who contributed in any way. Here are some images from the day:

Vinmar Solutions, the vendor that handles our lawn applications, has the Terrace scheduled for the latest servicing next Thursday (July 24).

Please be aware that may coincide with our usual Thursday lawn mowing by Skyview Landscaping, so it's best to exercise caution when walking your dogs and/or putting in your own walking/jogging activities that day. Details in the notice below.

1939 Nazi-era film to be shot in Troy

Coming to Troy.

Some people like to refer to Troy as "Hollywood on the Hudson" as its Victorian architecture, smalltown atmosphere and easy access continue to attract filmmakers.

"The Age of Innocence" (1993), starring Daniel Day-Lewis and Michelle Pfeiffer; "Scent of a Woman" (1993), starring Al Pacino and Chris O'Donnell; "Ironweed" (1983), starring Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep; "The Emperor's Club" (2002), starring Kevin Kline; "Time Machine" (2002), starring Jeremy Irons ... . The list can go on, and the continuation of the HBO series "The Gilded Age" shot primarily in Troy is the latest activity.

Now, in a real switch, "Triumph of the Will," a film set in 1930s Nazi Germany is on the docket and will showcase actors in Nazi costumery parading around Troy. Not to worry, but with the jobs, acting cameos, and influx of money to local shops, restaurants, and hotels come some inconvenience in the form of traffic disruptions and perhaps resurrecting some bad memories from people who underwent German oppression in the 1930s and '40s.

The City of Troy has just released a schedule of planned detours to accommodate the latest moviemaking production.

The film is a historical period piece set in 1939 Berlin. It tells the story of a rabbi who was among the last Jews to remain in the Nazi-controlled city.

As the City of Troy says, "As part of this production, actors dressed in historically accurate Nazi military uniforms will appear on location during some scenes. Residents and visitors should not be alarmed or feel threatened by these costumes or props. The City of Troy, the Troy Police Department, and nearby residents and businesses have been notified in advance of this sensitive portion of the filming. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation as Troy plays a role in bringing this important story to life."

By the way, during filming fake smoke will be visible from St. Mary’s Church on 3rd Street as part of a dramatized scene. This is a planned part of the production and there will be no actual fire or danger to the public. "The Troy Fire Department will be on-site throughout this portion of the shoot to ensure safety and oversee all effects," according to the City's announcement.

Sign up now for Terrace Summer Picnic

Happy hot July, Terrace neighbors.

Ellie and her party planning partners have posted a signup sheet on our mailbox gazebo bulletin board.

As announced earlier, the umpteenth annual Terrace Summer Picnic is scheduled for Sunday, July 27, on Hyland Court -- less than three weeks away.

The signup sheet will help the planners know how many people hope to attend, and what food you're bringing. As was the case last year, the THCA is providing a variety of subs so no one is stuck grilling and missing out on the socializing.

Please plan to bring your own chairs and beverages and, given the erratic weather of late, perhaps an umbrella just in case. Hope to see everyone there!

Connections to the 2 sides of fireworks

Terrace residents are used to frequent fireworks shows in the area, but around the 4th of July the activity ratchets up considerably.

While pyrotechnic displays are entertaining for most folks, some others have neuro-sensory impairments or have sensitive pets that need some TLC during all the noise. Tips for destressing can be found online via such websites as the National Center for PTSD, Everyday Health, and Cornell Veterinary Medicine.

Meanwhile, if fireworks are your thing, the Times Union has a lengthy list of scheduled shows in the immediate Capital Region and in the Lake George area. Click here to access it.
