'Pig Out,' 'Gilded Age' causing Troy traffic rerouting

Streets affected by 'Pig Out.'

As many roads in the City of Troy are being rebuilt due to repairs of broken water mains, pothole fixes, TV series filming, etc., getting around via car has been quite tricky this summer.

That situation won't change this weekend, with the confluence of HBO crews continuing to film episodes of "The Gilded Age" and the annual barbecue festival known as the "Troy Pig Out."

Here's the latest info from the City about traffic advisories for Sunday:

Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., the following roads will be closed to normal traffic because of the "Pig Out" -- 1st Street from River to State; 2nd State from River to State; Broadway from River to 3rd plus 3rd to 4th and 4th to 5th.

Sunday, from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., the following roads will be closed to normal traffic because of the HBO filming -- Pawling Avenue from Linden to Spring; Pawling Avenue from Hawthorne to Walker. Note: All traffic is being detoured to Spring Avenue.

• Sunday, August 18 -- Pawling Avenue from Hawthorne to Walker, closed to residential traffic.

In memory of Betsy Harte

It is with great sadness that we share news that our friend and longtime neighbor Betsy Harte passed away on Wednesday at The Eddy Village Green in Cohoes. She was 88.

Betsy’s Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 13, at Transfiguration Parish (formerly St. Bonaventure’s Church) in Speigletown (at 50 Hillview Drive, Troy). Friends are invited to her calling hours from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, August 12, at the church.

Her official obituary:

Mary Elizabeth “Betsy” Reilly Harte, died on Wednesday, August 7, 2024, at The Eddy Village Green in Cohoes. Born in Pittsfield, MA, on February 1, 1936, to the late Martin C. and Hazel M. Johnson Reilly, she was a graduate of St. Joseph’s High School where she met her future husband Richard J. “Dick” Harte. They celebrated 65 years of marriage on June 20 of this year.

During these 65 years they resided in Speigletown, NY, Orange CT, Port Charlotte, FL, and finally back to Troy. Speigletown is where they raised their four children: Richard (Margaret) Harte, Mary (Philip) Clemente, Ann (the late Willis) Wiley, and Martin (Susan) Harte.

She was blessed with nine grandchildren: Ryan (AJ) Bodenstab, Michael (Cristy) Harte, Drew Wiley and his wife Kaila Sheehan, Molly (Mikey) Zinna, Matthew (Maria Murrisky) Harte, Gabrielle Clemente and her husband Nicholas Hentschel, Vanessa Clemente (Michael Duff), Jack Harte and Sarah Harte. She also is survived by the nine great-grandchildren who kept her going for the past several years.

She also is survived by her sister Rosemary (John) McLaughlin and her sister-in-law Lucille Reilly as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, her three brothers Thomas, Martin and Joseph Reilly, and her son-in-law Willis Wiley.

Betsy attended Pittsfield Secretarial School. She then worked for the New England Telephone Co. as an operator until her marriage when she embarked on her greatest joy of being a wife and mother. After she raised her family, she went back to work as a customer service representative at Tektronix Inc.

Betsy was very true to her faith and involved in her church. She was known by all for her knitting and crocheting, especially the little hats and blankets for the babies in the hospital. She volunteered at The Farano Center for babies with AIDS where she would rock the babies for hours.

Betsy’s loving family honored her final wishes of being gifted to the Albany Medical College Anatomical Gift Program.

The Harte family would like to express their most sincere gratitude to everyone at The Eddy Village Green for their excellent care. Memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice of Rensselaer, 295 Valleyview Blvd., Rensselaer, NY 12144, or to the Rett Syndrome Research Trust, 67 Under Cliff Road, Trumbull, CT 06611, in memory of Betsy Harte.

Funeral arrangments have been entrusted to the John J. Sanvidge Funeral Home, 565 Fourth Avenue at 115th Street in Lansingburgh.

A scene from "The Gilded Age." / photo courtesy of HBO

Filming for the next season of the HBO series "The Gilded Age" once again will take place largely in Troy. That means some potential traffic disruptions as the production crew and cast do their thing beginning next week.

A City of Troy announcement states, "Residents are asked to follow all detours and no-parking signs. Closures may impact morning and evening commutes. Please plan accordingly. Additional parking restrictions and road closures for later dates will be announced shortly."

The initial batch of road closures to accommodate the transformation of modern Troy to 1800s New York City:
