Travel experts zero in on Troy

Magazine photo shows downtown Troy and the Hudson River.

The Travel, a prominent website taking its readers on a tour of some of New York State's most interesting places, writes, "A perfect place to start is Troy, an underrated mini New York City, but almost better than the Big Apple."

Curious what the non-resident writers say about our town? Go here to read the story.

Frear Park restaurant closed for year-long renovation

Any of us who are used to visiting the restaurant in Frear Park will need to find a different place to dine for at least a year.

The Irish-themed Park Pub Restaurant & Catering closed in December. Mark Miron, who had run it for 18 years, decided to retire.

The restaurant, located next to the golf course and ice rink, will undergo a million-dollar gut renovation that could include partial demolition and rebuilding of the structure.

“We did a full inspection last year. It’s going to take a lot of work, a good million or more,” said Mayor Carmella Mantello. "We’re not sure yet how much of it has to come down, or all of it."

She noted the need for structural, wiring, plumbing, and sewer issues as well as replacement of its large deck that presently rests on cinderblocks.

The work will be paid for out of $2.5 million in federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA)  funds the city earlier earmarked for Frear Park upgrades. Other projects include new pickleball courts, a community room, and cooking grills.

City Hall plans to issue a request for proposals from potential restaurant operators and begin preliminary demolition by the end of the month.

Food trucks will be onsite during the summer while construction is under way, Mantello said.

Snow removal plan for the Terrace

Skyview on the job. / Bill Dowd photo

More snow is headed our way and Skyview Landscapes, which handles removal chores on the Terrace, is sharing its plan.

Although we shared advance notice that Skyview was prepared to handle the snowfall, several people did their own shoveling this week before Skyview arrived. Unless you're pressed for time and absolutely have to do that, please let the people we're paying handle the shoveling and plowing so you're not unnecessarily expending energy and time.

Here's an excerpt from the latest Skyview work plan:

Is Troy running out of road salt?

Troy's road salt storage facility is full. / City photo

The recent news of a shortage of road salt in Troy and other communities prompted the usual blizzard of negative comments on social media about the operation of the City's resources in the middle of winter.

As frequently is the case, the gripes were premature and based on too little knowledge.

Mayor Carmella Mantello's emergency declaration about the supply was more than just a piece of information. Issuing it allowed the City to look elsewhere for supplies rather than having to be limited to the contractual supplier. As can be seen above in the photo posted today on Facebook, the City quickly obtained sufficient road salt to take care of our roads for the winter.

In a statement on its website, American Rock Salt, which supplies municipalities statewide, said that since October 14 of last year, teams have worked in the salt mines 'round the clock every day except holidays to mine the salt to meet what it labels a "historic demand." It has shipped more than 2.1 million tons of salt this winter.

American Rock Salt is located in Mount Morris, Livingston County, south of Rochester.

Howdy, neighbors

OK, so it still is 49 days until the beginning of Spring. Nevertheless, this photo taken today of some Terrace wildlife foraging -- and maybe also posing for the photographer? -- shows that not all the fauna in the neighborhood are in hibernation.

Free skates, ice time proposed for some at Knickerbacker

Knickerbacker Ice Rink

Mayor Carmella R. Mantello has proposed free ice skate rentals and skate time for Troy and Rensselaer County residents who are military active duty or veterans, senior citizens, and children below the age of six at Knickerbacker Ice Rink.

The proposal will be acted upon at the City Council finance meeting on Thursday, February 20, at City Hall.

"It is part of the City's initiative to expand recreational opportunities and access to quality facilities to improve the Quality of Life for residents of the City of Troy," she said. “We want to make sure that every resident -- especially our veterans, active military, seniors and young children -- can enjoy the Knick without barriers. This is a small way to show our appreciation for those who have served and to encourage families and seniors to take advantage of our city’s recreational spaces.

"When we partnered with Rensselaer County Executive McLaughlin and the County to bring back the Knick" -- see story here -- "our promise was to ensure that our residents can use the ice rink without having to jump through hoops. I am proud to say we are following through on that promise.”

City Council Majority Leader Tom Casey said, “When I was a teenager, I frequented open skate at the Knick. It provided a safe, drug free, and positive environment. We are always looking for positive outlets for the youth of Troy. Skating is not just fun but also promotes physical health, confidence, and community engagement."
