Here are the Terrace Holiday Luncheon details

We're getting closer to our annual three-course Terrace Holiday Luncheon.

The time, date, and location already have been shared -- 12:30 p.m. Friday, December 13, at McGreivey's Restaurant in Waterford. Now we can reveal the menu, price, and reservation deadline.

Organizer Janice Dessingue is accepting reservations at $32 per person, which is $2 less than last year. Checks, made payable to Janice, must be mailed or hand-delivered to her at 6 Hyland Circle no later than Tuesday, December 3.

The luncheon will consist of a salad course, your choice from a list of five entrees that will be provided at the event, plus dessert. Coffee, tea, water, and soda are included in the price, or there is a cash bar.

Again this year we ask attendees to bring items to be donated to Street Warriors of Troy, a local social help organization. Last year we donated socks, but this year the group is asking for winter gloves of all sizes and colors (for men, women, and children). Please do NOT gift wrap them.

Roadwork set near Prospect Park

If you plan to be driving in the neighborhood to the east of Troy's Prospect Park next week, plan accordingly.

Milling has begun at Prospect Park and paving will take place on Monday and Tuesday, November 18-19.

The park will be closed over the weekend and during the paving, then reopened on Wednesday, November 20.

Milling will begin Monday on Highland Avenue between Brunswick and Prospect Avenues and on Prospect between Christie Street and the dead end.

Planning a round of golf? See you in the spring

The weekend weather forecast calls for mostly sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-50s.

If that sounds like a good time for a final round of autumn golf at Frear Park, fuhgeddaboutid.

The City's 18-hole municipal course closed for the season after its Wednesday hours this week. It is scheduled to reopen some time in April, depending on the weather, operating from 7 a.m. to dark.

Fall cleanup and winter prep on the Terrace

A worker creates one of numerous leaf piles.

Skyview Landscaping crews descended on the Terrace today to wrangle the fallen autumn leaves into submission.

A bit of touchup trimming was done before a gazillion workers armed with leaf-blowers, rakes, and shovels went into action.

We're just five weeks from the official start of winter, so now's the time to finish up the annual prep chores. Among them:

  • Bringing in or covering outdoor furniture
  • Slipping winter covers over air-conditioning units
  • Shutting off the water supply to outdoor faucets (and leaving those faucets in the "on" position to be sure all water is drained and doesn't create a freezing situation)
  • Making sure your exterior lights are in best working order for the safety of the community (LED bulbs are recommended for long life and best illumination)
If, in the remaining weeks of November, you accumulate additional yard waste, click here for tips on how to get rid of it via City of Troy services.

Have extra yard waste? City can help

Some Terrace residents manicure their property more than others, going beyond what our grounds crew handles. That can result in the need to get rid of excess yard waste. The City of Troy can help with that.

In an announcement made this week, Mayor Carmella Mantello encouraged residents to bag leaves and yard waste and leave the bags at curbside on Thursday evenings when they  normally put out their garbage containers and recycling bins.

Leaves must be placed in brown recyclable paper leaf bags. Pickup will continue through either the first snowfall or the first week of December; whichever comes first.

The City reminds residents that leaves placed in plastic bags will not be collected; bags containing dirt, sand, rocks, sod, or other such materials will not be collected. Brush should not be placed in leaf bags.

A reminder: Skyview Landscaping has told us its crews are scheduled to be on the Terrace next Wednesday or Thursday for leaf removal. That schedule is, as always, weather dependent.

Our Fall leaf removal coming up

If it seems as if there are more leaves on the ground than on the trees, you're right.

Our grounds maintenance service, Skyview Landscaping, has been holding off on leaf removal for the past two weeks because the leaf-fall has been relatively slow due to the mild temperatures. But, you can't wait forever, so a crew will be working on the Terrace next week.

The schedule is weather-dependent, but likely will take place on Wednesday or Thursday, according to Skyview management.

Save the date for our holiday luncheon

The date for the now-annual Terrace Holiday Luncheon is Friday, December 13. Please save the date and plan to join your neighbors on this festive occasion.

Once again, we will assemble at McGreivey's Restaurant, located at 91 Broad Street, the main street in the Village of Waterford just across the Union Bridge from Lansingburgh. That was the site of our last two holiday luncheons, both well-attended by Terrace residents and friends.

Event organizers Janice Dessingue and Anne Hunter will share details as plans develop. What we do know at this point is that the mid-day luncheon will be a fundraiser in some format for Street Warriors, a community assistance organization based in Troy.
