Our friend and Terrace neighbor Jerry Gordon was recently honored at the local organization A Place for Jazz with the 2025 Jazz Journalists Association "Jazz Hero Award."

He is shown here being presented the award by Susan Brink of the Jazz Journalists Association. She is the jazz music director of the Hudson Mohawk Radio Network at The Sanctuary for Independent Media in Troy.

Award recipients are jazz advocates who have had significant impact in their local communities. The awards, made annually on the basis of nominations from community members, are presented by their local fans and friends in conjunction with the JJA’s annual Jazz Awards honoring significant achievements in jazz music and journalism.

Congratulations, Jerry!

Saturday fundraiser for 'The Wall That Heals' visit

"The Wall That Heals" is a traveling version of the Vietnam Veteran Memorial in Washington, DC. It will be visiting Troy in June.

This fundraiser, open to everyone, at Da Great Lounge in East Greenbush is intended to help offset the costs of bringing the display here. It will be the only visit in New York State this year.

In search of THCA Board candidates

To my Terrace neighbors:

This weekend, I sent a note to our Nominating Committee members -- Sid Legg, Joan Richardson, and Paula Fox-Murphy -- concerning the selection of THCA Board members that will take place at our annual meeting this fall. As a result, you may be hearing from one or all of them as they seek to carry out their duties. The text of the note:

Your panel's bi-annual chore -- creating a slate of candidates for the Terrace at Highpointe Community Association (THCA) Board -- is coming up this year when all current board members' terms expire.

I'm copying those current members on this email, but to avoid any potential conflict of interest about their wishes and status, I'm not asking them directly as board president if they wish to stand for reelection. That will be up to you committee members.

While we don't need a slate of candidates until the fall, I thought it best to remind you early in the year to provide enough lead time for you to exercise due diligence in finding (a) which current members wish to stand for reelection, and (b) which other THCA residents may wish to stand for election. We can hold a secret ballot at our annual meeting to select people.

Per our bylaws, homeowners vote for people to be Board members, then at an organizational meeting the incoming Board elects specific officers from among those individuals. Thus, the membership at large does not specifically pick the president, VPs, etc.

The current Board has been together for quite some time, but we have had significant turnover among residents in that period and we may have other people not previously part of the THCA who wish to step up for the opportunity to serve the community. Given that, I'll send out an email to all residents to let them know we want to be sure to canvass the neighborhood so that all voices are heard.

As always, thank you for your service to the Terrace community. While your committee's work isn't required often, it is critical to the continued success of a self-governed -- and therefore a responsive and financially affordable -- homeowners association.

It's (semi)official -- Winter is over

Forget everything your local weather gurus predict. Winter is over.

Steve Sanders, the Terrace's winter-time liaison with Skyview, reports, "I removed all our  metal snow poles and reflectors today. I thus decree that winter is over!"

How can you argue with that?

Thanks to all who aided the winter snow removal process by keeping cars garaged and/or parked off-street. It made Skyview's plowing work more effective.

Frear Park foodie scene update

As The Terrace Times reported back in February, the restaurant at Frear Park is in for major upgrades.

Now, Mayor Carmella Mantello has announced that in the meantime a new, temporary restaurant and lounge will be created at the city-owned facility during the park's "Transformation Revitalization Project."

"The establishment will be operated by Troy native Brad Stevens, a longtime hospitality professional with deep roots in the city," the mayor said in a news release. "The owner of the former Park Pub Restaurant, Mark Miron, will be the sublessor. Under the new sublease agreement, the restaurant and lounge will provide a welcoming space for everyone to enjoy quality food, beverages, and camaraderie."

Stevens said, “It’s great to be back in Troy, a city that has always meant so much to me. Troy is a prime destination for investment and growth, and I’m excited to bring new energy to Frear Park with this project. We’re looking forward to offering great food, a welcoming atmosphere, and, of course, keeping the famous peanut butter and jelly wings on the menu.”

The temporary restaurant and lounge is expected to open in time for the upcoming golf season. The grand opening and menu offerings will be announced soon, as will details of the full transformation.

Stevens is best known for his B-Rad's Catering operation, which over the years has covered such efforts as two B-rad’s Executive Bistro locations, two B-rad’s Bistro Express locations, the B-rad’s Mobile Bistro food truck, and the catering service that included private aviation catering and catering for the Saratoga Polo Association and Parti Events & Banquet Hall in the former Germania Hall in Troy's Lansingburgh neighborhood with his father, Mark Stevens.

Household hazardous waste disposal set

The City of Troy and Rensselaer County are partnering with the Town of Bethlehem for the "2025 Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Events."

As explained in a Troy news release, "The program consists of four events providing residents ... the opportunity to safely dispose of hazardous materials not accepted through normal garbage collection service."

Such events will not be collecting electronics, tires, or shredding. Those items will be collected at separate events, where offered by specific municipalities

The first event will be held on Saturday, May 10, at the Troy Resource Management Facility (aka The Alamo) at 3000 Main Street. Participating municipalities will include the cities of Troy and Rensselaer, and the towns of Grafton, North Greenbush, Schodack, and Bethlehem.    Advanced registration is required.

Residents must visit their participating municipalities'  website to register.
