Happy Thanksvivijg!

This iconic painting by the late artist Norman Rockwell celebates one of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's "Four Freedoms" -- the "Freedom From Want," released in 1943.

And with it, The Terrace Times wishes the warmest of greetings to our community.

Rockwell, who lived and worked nearby in Berkshire County, MA, often used local people and neighborhood in Troy as the subjects of his paintings.

How will the Turkey Troy affect driving?

A typical Turkey Troy starting pack.

The 78th annual Troy Turkey Troy, the longest-running public event in the city, is gearing up for Thursday, Thanksgiving Day, with the usual parking and driving restrictions.

Here is the City's list of impact points beginning on Wednesday and running through the end of the foot race on Thursday.

Trash pickup won't be affected by holiday

Each time we come up on a holiday, the We-Know-Things Team at The Terrace Times is asked if the City of Troy's trash/recycling pickup schedule will be affected.

As we head toward Thanksgiving this week, the answer is, no, it will not be affected.

While city residents who normally have Thursday pickup will be affected, we will not because the regular schedule will resume after that, so you can put out your garbage cans and recycling bins with confidence on Thursday night for Friday morning pickup.

And, as we've reminded Terrace folk innumerable times over the years, the City asks that the trash receptacles not be put outside until at least 7 p.m. on Thursdays because -- well, who wants to look at your garbage cans all day? So, be courteous to your neighbors.

Holiday decorating effort set for Saturday

This week ushers in the holiday season, and with it the need to deck the halls -- or at least outdoor parts of the Terrace -- with the appropriate seasonal decorations.

To accomplish that, we're asking for as many volunteers as possible to gather at 9 a.m. this coming Saturday in the mailbox area to begin working together to put up our decorations.

The forecast is for sunny skies on Saturday, so you won't have to dodge rain or snow. And, since many hands make work lighter, we're hoping to see a strong turnout. Plus, you can work off any residual Thanksgiving bloat.

See you there!

Golf course closes for winter, but Frear Park remains open

Troy's Frear Park golf course has closed for the winter months after a season in which it hosted more than 35 charity golf tournaments, 25 full-season men’s, women’s, and senior leagues, and thousands of individual rounds.

However, that doesn't mean that the park itself is closed. As noted in an announcement from City Hall, it "encourages residents and visitors to continue enjoying Frear Park’s all-year-round recreation opportunities, including sleigh riding, snowshoeing, trail hiking, fishing, and cross-country skiing. "

In the upcoming new year, the City has a number of major improvements planned for the park such as "enhancing accessibility, recreation, and beautification across the entire property."  Planned upgrades include:

• New accessible playground and resurfacing at North Lake Park.
• New playground equipment.
• Landscaping and beautification at the lower park near the ice rink.
• Construction of new tennis and pickleball courts adjacent to the temporary restaurant site.
• Work on building a new, permanent restaurant.
