Any of us who are used to visiting the restaurant in Frear Park will need to find a different place to dine for at least a year.
The Irish-themed Park Pub Restaurant & Catering closed in December. Mark Miron, who had run it for 18 years, decided to retire.
The restaurant, located next to the golf course and ice rink, will undergo a million-dollar gut renovation that could include partial demolition and rebuilding of the structure.“We did a full inspection last year. It’s going to take a lot of work, a good million or more,” said Mayor Carmella Mantello. "We’re not sure yet how much of it has to come down, or all of it."
She noted the need for structural, wiring, plumbing, and sewer issues as well as replacement of its large deck that presently rests on cinderblocks.
The work will be paid for out of $2.5 million in federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds the city earlier earmarked for Frear Park upgrades. Other projects include new pickleball courts, a community room, and cooking grills.
City Hall plans to issue a request for proposals from potential restaurant operators and begin preliminary demolition by the end of the month.
Food trucks will be onsite during the summer while construction is under way, Mantello said.
